What is the Student Council?

In August, two new Student Council advisors were appointed: Mrs. Donna Fuller and Ms. Melissa Zambito. This year eighty-eight students from grades 9-12 joined the Student Council.  The four officers are President Kayla Hansen, Vice President Angelina Damiano, Treasurer Mike Pizzillo, and Secretary Katie Mardo.  Angelina Damiano and Aishuraya Bhadauria serve as delegates on the Regional Student Council Board of Massachusetts.

In August, 20 Student Council members assisted with Freshmen Orientation by handing out schedules and giving tours of the high school.

In October, the 4 officers and two advisors participated in a Leadership Conference at Holy Cross College in Worcester.  Here the students met with other student council leaders from across Massachusetts.  They attended leadership seminars and returned to school with many exciting new ideas for community service and for developing a sense of community at Bellingham High School.

The Student Council organized a very successful Spirit Week prior to Home Coming.  The whole school was united in a fun filled rally on Friday.  The rally involved teams, the band, color guard, teachers, and students, and of course, the school mascot, THE HAWK.

November and December have proved very busy for the Council.  The Council had a raffle for a lovely basket donated by Whole Foods.  In addition, the students collected 3 car loads of food during its annual food drive.  Currently the Council is having a toy drive.  Unwrapped toys may be dropped off in the main office until Dec. 12th.

The Student Council is also working to protect our environment with its recycling efforts.  Recycle bins are located throughout the building which the Council maintains.

To raise money for scholarships and leadership development, the Student Council is having a book fair at Barnes and Nobles on Dec. 14th and 15th in Bellingham. A percentage of the sales (excluding gift certificates and Nooks) will go to the Council.  You can also place orders on line at BN.COM/bookfairs and enter Bookfair ID 11205093 until Dec. 20th.

To created holiday spirit, the Student Council is sponsoring an ugly holiday sweater contest.  The cost is only $1 to participate.  The winner will receive a prize! Join the fun and laughs!

The Student Council will be gathering to celebrate the holidays on December 19th at 2 PM for a holiday party, complete with pizza and snacks.

The Student Council’s goals are to develop leadership skills for students and to raise money for scholarships.  Donations toward its worthy goals are always appreciated in the form of checks or gift certificates.

Several spring events are planned, such as carnation sales for St. Patrick’s Day and a golf tournament.
